Deep-Sea Sharks

The birdbeak dogfish, Deania calcea, is a dogfish shark found in the Pacific Ocean around Japan, Southern Australia, New Zealand, and Chile, and in the Atlantic Ocean from Iceland to South Africa. There are only four species in the genus which are found on or near the bottom of the continental slope and abyssal plain. D. calcea is often caught as bycatch by trawl and hook fisheries. With collections of this species from the North Atlantic we are working with collaborators to conduct a phylogeographic study of this ecologically important species.
